A. Curriculum Composition of the Physics Study Program

The curriculum of the Physics Study Program within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is designed based on national higher education standards, ensuring that students acquire comprehensive competencies covering fundamental knowledge, theoretical understanding, computational literacy, and practical/experimental skills. The curriculum emphasizes both depth and breadth aligned with academic and professional needs in physics and related interdisciplinary fields.

The Physics Study Program consists of five main categories of courses:

  • University General Compulsory Courses (MKWU)
  • Faculty General Courses (SMPA / MMPA)
  • Compulsory Program Courses
  • Elective Program Courses
  • Practicum/Experimental Courses
University General Compulsory Courses (MKWU)

MKWU are required for all undergraduate Physics students (S1) at USK. These shape students’ character, national insight, and basic academic competencies, and instill values of faith, morality, citizenship, humanity, and environmental awareness.

Nine (9) MKWU courses: – Civic Education
– Disaster and Environmental Studies
– Character Development 1
– Character Development 2
– Pancasila
– Indonesian Language
– English Language
– Religious Education
– Community Service Program (KKN)

Outcomes: Students gain nationhood values, ethical and effective academic communication in Indonesian and English, and social responsibility. Graduates are expected to excel not only in physics knowledge and laboratory skills but also in integrity, social awareness, and responsibility as ethically driven citizens.

B. Total Study Load

Undergraduate (S1): minimum 144 SKS for graduation, consisting of theory, laboratory/practicum, elective courses, KKN, internship/fieldwork where applicable, and a final thesis.

Master’s (S2): minimum 54 SKS in accordance with faculty academic regulations.

ECTS Conversion: The program applies the following equivalency with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS):

  • 1 SKS = 1.67 ECTS

This enables recognition of academic achievements for mobility, collaboration, and exchanges.

General credit patterns:

– Undergraduate (S1) courses: 2–4 SKS, with some electives at 1 SKS.
– Master’s (S2) courses: 2 – 3 SKS (compulsory and elective).
– Practicum/experimental courses: commonly 1 SKS at both levels.

C. Course Numbering System

The Physics Study Program uses course codes indicating category, academic level, and semester offering.

Undergraduate Level (S1)

  • MKWU → University General Courses
  • SMPA → Faculty General Courses
  • SPHY → Physics Compulsory Program Courses and Elective Program Courses

Master’s Level (S2)

  • MMPA → Faculty General Courses
  • MPHY → Physics Compulsory Program Courses and Elective Program Courses

Semester Offering (last two digits of the code)

  • 01, 03, 05, 07, 09, 11, … → offered in odd semesters
  • 02, 04, 06, 08, 10, 12, … → offered in even semesters

Note: The department may extend actual code ranges. The above follows the faculty’s established pattern adapted for Physics Department.

D. Examples of Course Code Interpretation

Undergraduate Level (S1)

  • MKWU1004 – English (University General Course)
  • SMPA1001 – INTRODUCTION TO CALCULUS → code ending 01 indicates odd semester
  • SPHY1008 – CALCULUS OF PHYSICS → code ending 08 indicates even semester
  • SPHY3021 – STATISTICAL PHYSICS → code ending 21 indicates odd semester
  • SMFI6049 – Photonics → prefix 60 indicates an elective course

Master’s Level (S2)

  • MPHY1003 – Electrodinamics → compulsory, odd semester
  • MPHY1002 – Advance Data Analysis → compulsory, even semester
  • MPHY6029 – STRUCTURE AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS → prefix 60 indicates an elective

E. Fields of Interest / Concentrations

To support in-depth development aligned with students’ interests, the Physics Study Program offers the following concentrations:

Undergraduate Level (S1) – 6 Concentrations

  1. Theoretical and Computational Physics

  2. Medical Physics and Nuclear Applications

  3. Geophysics and Atmospheric Science

  4. Materials Physics and Renewable Energy

  5. Electronics and Instrumentation

  6. Waves, Optics, and Laser Applications (GOAL)

Master’s Level (S2) – 6 Concentrations

  1. Medical Physics and Nuclear Applications
  2. Material Physics
  3. Optics and Laser Application

  4. Instrumentation and Computation Physics

  5. STEM Education

  6. Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences

F. Special Rules and Exceptions

Special provisions within the Physics Study Program:

  • Community Service (KKN) at the undergraduate level may be taken after students complete a minimum of 100 SKS.
  • Certain courses may be offered in either odd or even semesters depending on academic policy and lab/infrastructure availability.
  • Practicum/experimental courses and prerequisite-structured courses must be completed to ensure smooth academic progress.

Final Project / Thesis Codes
