Department History

Established in 1989, the Physics Department at Syiah Kuala University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) was founded to provide Indonesia with the necessary physics graduates. Over the past three decades, the department has evolved into a leading program, supported by 34 faculty members (including 23 Ph.D.s and six professors) and contemporary facilities conducive to academic excellence, research, and community service. The program has produced over 860 graduates and holds an “A” (Excellent) accreditation for its undergraduate degree from BAN-PT, as well as an “Excellent” rating for its graduate program from LAMSAMA. These accreditations demonstrate the program’s commitment to advancing physics by cultivating globally competitive graduates with strong competencies and a socio-sciencepreneurial mindset. The program is guided by an integrated quality management system that emphasizes transparency, accountability, and efficiency.

Graduate Competencies

Physics graduates from Syiah Kuala University (Unsyiah)’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) possess strong theoretical and practical skills. They combine analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities with the application of scientific methods, modern technology, computation, and instrumentation. They are trained to be innovative, ethical, and socially responsible and are prepared for careers as researchers, educators, engineers, entrepreneurs, and professionals in diverse sectors, including academia, industry, and government, both domestically and globally.

Campus Life

Physics students at Unsyiah experience a dynamic campus life centered around the active Physics Student Association (HIMAFIS). The association organizes key annual events like the Physics Complex and Open House (PCOH), featuring science and technology competitions. Students gain crucial practical skills in modern laboratories and through mandatory activities like the Master’s Field Practicum. This environment fosters scientific expertise, entrepreneurial development, and social responsibility alongside rigorous academics.

Undergraduate Education

The Undergraduate Physics Program at Syiah Kuala University prepares science graduates, especially physics specialists, with the skills needed to support national progress and advance science in Aceh. It focuses on six key areas. These are theoretical and computational physics, medical physics and nuclear applications, geophysics and atmospheric sciences, material physics and renewable energy, electronics and instrumentation, and waves, optics, and spectroscopy. With nearly 35 years of experience, the program provides modern facilities and sophisticated instruments that meet regional standards in Southeast Asia. The university is committed to training highly skilled scientists who can compete globally. Prospective students are encouraged to apply.

Graduate Education

The Master’s Program in Physics (PSMFIS) at Syiah Kuala University was officially established on September 30, 2013, and is currently accredited with an “Excellent” grade by the Indonesian Ministry of Education.
