Banda Aceh, June 4, 2025 – The Physics Department of Syiah Kuala University (USK) once again hosted an international guest lecture on Monday–Tuesday, June 2–3, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. WIB, at the Mini Theater Room of the USK Graduate School.

The event featured two prominent speakers from the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb, Croatia:

  • Prof. Željko Bačić – Director of Satellite Geodesy Croatia and an expert in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Prof. Vesna Poslončec-Petrić – Head of the Cartography Department, Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb.

On Monday, June 2, 2025, Prof. Željko delivered a lecture titled “Latest Developments in GIS Technology in Croatia,” discussing advancements in GIS applications, satellite-based mapping, and spatial data integration to support regional research and planning.

On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Prof. Vesna delivered a lecture titled “Modern Technology in Cartography: Crowdsensing and Augmented Reality (AR).” In this session, participants gained in-depth insights into:

  • Crowdsensing: A method of collecting data from participants using mobile devices such as smartphones or wearable devices, applicable in environmental mapping, air quality monitoring, and traffic management.
  • Augmented Reality (AR): A technology that integrates real-world environments with digital elements in real time, allowing users to access additional visual information such as text, images, and spatial data within digital maps.

The event was attended by students from the Physics Department, postgraduate participants across USK, faculty members, and researchers interested in advancing digital mapping and geospatial technologies.

The Head of the Physics Department at USK stated that the guest lecture aimed to broaden students’ understanding of cutting-edge geospatial technology applications globally. “We hope students gain new inspiration and opportunities for international collaboration through such scientific gatherings,” he said.

This guest lecture is part of the Physics Department at USK’s internationalization efforts to strengthen global academic partnerships and enhance students’ competencies in applied research, spatial technology, and digital innovation.
