Banda Aceh, October 10, 2024 – The 2024 National Climate Literacy Seminar was successfully held on October 8, 2024, at the Multipurpose Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Syiah Kuala University (USK). Organized by the Aceh Climate Station of the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) in collaboration with the Department of Physics at USK’s FMIPA, the event aimed to enhance public understanding and awareness, particularly among the younger generation, regarding climate change and the importance of mitigation measures that can be implemented at the local level.
The seminar, themed “One Step, A Thousand Impacts: The Role of Youth as Climate Action Pioneers,” was attended by over 150 participants, including students, faculty members, and environmental practitioners. The speakers, comprising experts from the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), faculty members and researchers from Syiah Kuala University, and representatives from the Aceh Department of Environment and Forestry, presented on current topics regarding climate change, its environmental impacts, and feasible mitigation measures. They also provided in-depth insights into Aceh’s climate conditions and the vital role the younger generation can play in addressing these climate challenges.
Participants had the opportunity to interact directly with the experts during a highly interactive Q&A session. This session allowed participants to explore concrete solutions that can be applied in daily life to reduce the impacts of climate change.
In addition to the seminar, the event featured various educational activities and competitions, including a climate action initiative at the USK Waste Bank and a digital poster design contest on climate change. The competition was attended by participants from various regions and aimed to encourage creativity in conveying environmental messages that could capture the attention of Indonesia’s youth.
The 2024 National Climate Literacy Seminar is expected to serve as a first step in strengthening climate literacy among the youth of Aceh and Indonesia as a whole. Through collaboration between the government, academia, and the public, it is hoped that more initiatives will emerge to mitigate the impacts of climate change and build a more sustainable future.
