BANDA ACEH – The Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing international academic quality through the ASIIN international accreditation visitation for Cluster B.
The on-site visit, held from May 7 to May 8, 2026, marked an important step for USK in strengthening the global competitiveness of its science and technology-based study programs. As part of Cluster B, the Physics Department participated alongside programs in mathematics, statistics, informatics, and artificial intelligence, reflecting FMIPA USK’s strategic role in supporting innovation, research, and digital transformation.
Cluster B covers seven flagship study programs, including the Bachelor’s in Physics and the Master’s in Physics. Through this international assessment, the Physics Department demonstrated its academic readiness, curriculum relevance, research productivity, laboratory capacity, and commitment to continuous quality improvement.

Physics as a Pillar of Scientific and Technological Advancement
The Physics Department plays a vital role in developing fundamental and applied sciences at USK. Its academic programs are designed to prepare graduates with strong analytical skills, research competence, and the ability to contribute to modern scientific and technological challenges.
During the accreditation visit, the ASIIN expert group reviewed several key components of the academic process, including curriculum structure, learning outcomes, teaching methods, student support, research facilities, and quality assurance mechanisms. The evaluation also highlighted the department’s efforts to align its academic programs with international standards and the demands of Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0.
International Expert Evaluation
The ASIIN visitation was coordinated by Emeline Jerez, PhD, representing ASIIN Headquarters in Germany, and involved an international panel of academic experts, industry representatives, and student representatives. The evaluation process provided an opportunity for FMIPA USK, particularly the Physics Department, to receive constructive feedback from international reviewers.

The Dean of FMIPA USK, Prof. Dr. Taufik Fuadi Abidin, S.Si., M. Tech., emphasized that the Cluster B accreditation visit is a historic milestone for the faculty. He stated that programs in mathematics, informatics, physics, and statistics are essential pillars in supporting science, technology, and innovation in the modern era.
Laboratory and Research Facility Review
One of the important parts of the visitation was the review of facilities supporting teaching, research, and innovation. For the Physics Department, the assessment included attention to laboratories and research activities related to materials physics, optics, instrumentation, and other areas of applied physics.

The assessors observed how laboratory facilities support student learning, research output, and collaboration. The visit also became a moment for the department to present its academic strengths, including the integration of research-based learning and the development of scientific competencies relevant to national and international needs.
Student and Stakeholder Engagement
In addition to reviewing documents and facilities, the ASIIN expert group also held interactive discussions with students and stakeholders. These sessions were intended to gain direct insight into students’ learning experiences, academic support, access to facilities, and opportunities for broader academic development.

Such dialogue is an important element of international accreditation because it ensures that quality assurance is not only measured through documents, but also through the lived experiences of students, lecturers, alumni, and partners.
Toward Internationally Competitive Physics Education
Through its participation in the ASIIN Cluster B accreditation process, the Physics Department of FMIPA USK continues to strengthen its position as a center for physics education, research, and innovation. This effort is expected to expand international collaboration, improve graduate competitiveness, and enhance the visibility of USK on the global higher education stage. The visitation concluded with a feedback session in which the expert group delivered initial impressions and recommendations to university and faculty leaders. The results of this international accreditation process are expected to further support FMIPA USK’s mission to become an internationally recognized faculty in science and technology. With this step, the Physics Department reaffirms its commitment to producing competent, adaptive, and globally competitive graduates who are ready to contribute to scientific advancement, technological innovation, and sustainable development.
