Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Syiah Kuala University hosted a guest lecture on the topic “Sedimentology and Paleotsunamis,” presented by Dr. Jedrzej Majewski, a geologist from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. The event, which took place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM WIB, was attended by students and faculty members of the Department of Physics, FMIPA, USK.
During the lecture, Dr. Majewski explained the basic concepts of sedimentology and how paleotsunami research can provide insights into the history of natural disasters that occurred in the past, highlighting case studies conducted in Susoh and Bengkulu. The lecture was particularly engaging, especially in explaining how tsunamis can leave physical traces that can be studied through sediment analysis.
Dr. Majewski also expressed his desire to collaborate on research related to ancient tsunamis in Aceh, given that this region has a long history of tsunami disasters, including the major event in 2004. He hopes that through joint research, more data can be gathered to support future disaster mitigation efforts and enhance understanding of the tsunami patterns occurring in the region. “This guest lecture is expected to open opportunities for international collaboration in geological research and disaster mitigation,” said Dr. Saumi Syahreza, Head of the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, USK.
